Field Service and Instrumentation

VRS Recruitment places field service engineers and instrumentation specialists into UK instrument vendors, laboratory automation providers, and capital equipment manufacturers. Shimadzu, Sotax, Lablogic, and PerkinElmer are among the clients we place into. Our engineers understand the difference between a service call and a calibration visit.

Service Engineering Disciplines We Recruit Against

Field service engineering recruitment runs on instrument-platform fluency. VRS consultants ask which platforms the engineer has serviced, which qualification protocols they have led, and how they handle the customer-facing technical conversation. A mass spec service engineer with Q-TOF experience is a different hire to a chromatography engineer with HPLC experience, even when both CVs say 'field service'.

Which instrument platforms does VRS recruit field service engineers for?

Chromatography (HPLC, UPLC, GC and coupled MS variants), mass spectrometry (Q-TOF, Triple Quad, Ion Trap, Orbitrap), laboratory automation (liquid handlers, plate readers, robotic platforms), and broader analytical instrumentation. Capital equipment field service for bioprocessing, dissolution, and stability instrument lines also routes through this desk.

What does instrument qualification work involve?

IQ, OQ, and PQ protocols for installed instruments, often in GMP environments where the qualification documentation carries regulatory weight. Field service engineers with qualification experience are recruited consistently because every new instrument install requires the cycle, and many existing installs need periodic requalification when methods or environments change.

Job Titles VRS Places

Placements run from junior field service engineer through to service engineering director appointments. Common titles include field service engineer, senior field service engineer, instrument engineer, cross-site engineer, customer service engineer, regional service engineer, service engineer, maintenance engineer, technical support engineer, applications engineer, T&I engineer (test and installation), and onsite service engineer. Service engineering management titles cover senior, regional, and director appointments.

Does VRS recruit installation and commissioning engineers?

Yes. Installation engineers (T&I, test and installation engineers) sit on the same desk. These roles handle initial instrument installation at customer sites, IQ/OQ commissioning, and customer technical training. Demand cycles attach to vendor sales cycles - peak installation periods follow strong sales quarters. We hold candidate availability calendars across the major instrument lines.

Which contract assignments come through the field service desk?

Maintenance project work attached to laboratory move-and-fit-out projects, qualification and revalidation projects in GMP environments, short-term cover for established engineers on long absence, and dedicated project-based instrument commissioning teams for major capital programmes. Day rates calibrate against platform experience, IR35 status, and project location.

Industries and Territory Structure

Icon

How do UK field service territories typically work?

Most instrument vendors operate four to six UK territories: London and South East, Midlands, North West, North East, Scotland, and a national-key-accounts overlay. Engineers are home-based with company vehicles and travel daily to customer sites. Day rates apply where vendor pricing models pass through to customer contracts. Mileage and on-call premiums are sector-standard.

Icon

Do field service engineers travel internationally?

Some do. Senior engineers and applications specialists with niche platform experience occasionally travel internationally for vendor support or training delivery. Most UK field service roles are UK-only with national travel. International mobility is confirmed at candidate registration. Where international travel is a role requirement, we screen for confirmed availability.

FAQs

Common-platform shortlists (HPLC, GC, standard lab automation) typically deliver in five to seven working days. Mass spectrometry specialists, especially Q-TOF or Orbitrap experience, require seven to twelve working days because the candidate universe is smaller. Senior service engineering management roles run on retained search with structured methodology.
