Instruments and lab equipment we recruit for
Field Service Engineer and Engineering recruitment runs on instrument fluency. Our recruiters understand the technical expertise behind the job title. We look beyond CV keywords to assess engineers’ experience with specific instruments and platforms, their troubleshooting abilities and customer-facing skills. A mass spec service engineer with Q-TOF experience is a different hire to a chromatography engineer with HPLC experience, even when both CVs say 'field service'. We also recognise the qualities that make a great service engineer, helping scientists, physicists and technicians with the right transferable skills make a successful transition into engineering.
Which instrument platforms does VRS recruit engineers for?
We recruit Field Service Engineers and Instrument Engineers across a wide range of scientific instrumentation, including chromatography (HPLC, UPLC, GC), mass spectrometry (Q-TOF, triple quadrupole, ion trap, Orbitrap), Imaging (X-ray, microscopy) and laboratory automation (liquid handlers, plate readers and robotic systems). We cover broader lab instrumentation & specialist equipment used in bioprocessing, dissolution and stability testing. Our recruitment is vendor-neutral, covering instruments from all manufacturers.
What does instrument qualification work involve?
Instrument qualification involves Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ) and Performance Qualification (PQ), ensuring laboratory equipment is correctly installed, operates as intended and performs reliably. This is important regulated (GMP, GLP) laboratories, where thorough documentation and compliance are essential. We recruit Field Service Engineers with experience in instrument qualification, validation and requalification, supporting both new installations and existing laboratory equipment.
Engineering roles we recruit for
From Scientists transitioning into field service to Service Managers, we recruit across all levels of experience. Typical roles include Field Service Engineers, Instrument Engineers, Instrument Technicians, Onsite and Cross-Site Engineers, Technical Support Engineers and Applications Engineers. We also recruit for service management and leadership positions, including Service Managers, Heads of Service and Director appointments.
Beyond field service, we recruit Electronic, Mechanical and Design Engineers, as well as Test and Installation (T&I) Engineers to support new product development across scientific instrumentation and laboratory equipment.
Does VRS recruit installation and commissioning engineers?
Absolutely! We recruit Installation and Commissioning Engineers, including Test & Installation (T&I) Engineers, across a wide range of scientific instrumentation. These roles cover everything from initial instrument installation and IQ/OQ qualification to commissioning and customer training. We support instrument vendors with both permanent hires and contract engineers.
Which contract assignments come through the field service desk?
We recruit contract engineers for a wide range of projects, including laboratory relocations and fit-outs, instrument installation and commissioning, maintenance, and qualification and revalidation work. We also provide short-term cover for existing service teams and project-based engineering support for major equipment installations.
Industries and territories we recruit for
We recruit for Instrument Engineers and Field Service Engineers across the UK and Europe, supporting scientific instrument vendors, capital equipment manufacturers, third-party service providers and specialist maintenance companies. Our expertise extends to laboratory automation, in vitro diagnostics (IVD) and medical devices, as well as onsite engineering teams within pharmaceutical, biotechnology, CRO and CDMO laboratories.
From regional field service positions to nationwide and international roles, we understand the importance of finding engineers with the right technical expertise in the right location to support you and your customers.
How do UK field service territories typically work?
Field Service Engineers are typically home-based, covering a defined territory (such as London, South East, Midlands, North West, North East or Scotland) and travel to customer sites for installation, servicing, maintenance and repairs. Territories vary depending on the manufacturer, instrument and customer base, ranging from regional UK patches to nationwide coverage. Some roles also involve international travel, overnight stays or on-call support, depending on customer requirements.
Do field service engineers travel internationally?
Some do! We recruit Field Service Engineers across the UK and Europe, where it's common for engineers to cover an entire country or travel across several countries within their territory. While some roles involve regional travel, others require regular international travel for instrument installations, servicing, technical support and customer training. We take individual travel preferences and availability into account to ensure the right fit for each role.
