How do I use AI in my job search?

How do I use AI in my job search? 6 Practical Tips

AI is changing the way we look for jobs, and used well, it can be a brilliant tool for jobseekers. From researching potential employers to preparing for interviews, there are plenty of ways it can make your job search easier, more efficient and hopefully more successful!

Here are six ways to make AI work for you.

1. Research potential employers

Before applying for a role, it's worth doing your homework on the company. AI tools can help you research potential employers, understand their products and services, identify competitors and explore wider industry trends.

For example, if you're interviewing with a scientific instrumentation manufacturer, you could ask AI to explain their key technologies, main competitors and position in the market.

This can help you decide whether a company is right for you, tailor your application and arrive at interviews better informed.

Our tip: Always double-check important information against reliable sources, particularly company websites and recent news. AI doesn't always get its facts right!

2. Discover opportunities you might otherwise miss

Job boards are an obvious starting point, but not every opportunity is advertised in the same place.

AI can help you identify companies working in your area of scientific expertise, suggest alternative job titles and highlight industries where your skills might be transferable.

For example, a graduate with experience in chromatography might be surprised by the variety of opportunities available across pharmaceutical research, environmental testing, food analysis and scientific instrumentation.

Use AI to broaden your search beyond the job titles and employers you already know.

3. Improve your CV and cover letters

AI can be a useful second pair of eyes when writing applications. Try sharing a job description and asking it to identify which of your skills and experiences are most relevant.

It can also help improve the structure, clarity and spelling of your CV, or suggest ways to make a cover letter more specific to the role.

Many employers use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to manage applications, some of which use automated screening. Including relevant keywords from the job description, particularly scientific techniques, instrumentation and specialist skills, can help ensure your experience is recognised.

But here's the important bit: AI should help you write your application, not write it for you!

Recruiters see plenty of generic, AI-generated CVs and cover letters. Your application needs to sound like you and accurately reflect your experience. Never claim skills or knowledge you don't have.

4. Practise for interviews

This is one of our favourite uses of AI!

You can ask tools to act as an interviewer, using a job description to generate realistic questions about your technical experience, career motivations and suitability for the role.

You can even practise answering questions aloud and ask for feedback on how clearly you've communicated your experience.

It's a great way to build confidence, particularly if you find practising interviews with friends or family a bit cringeworthy!

Try asking AI to challenge your answers with follow-up questions, just as a real interviewer might.

5. Research salaries and assess job offers

Not sure what salary to expect, or whether an offer is competitive?

AI can help you explore salary benchmarks for particular scientific roles, locations and experience levels. It can also help you understand how factors such as industry sector, technical specialism and geographical location might influence pay.

You could even use it to practise a salary negotiation conversation before speaking with a potential employer.

Just remember that salary information generated by AI isn't always accurate or up to date, particularly for niche scientific roles. Check the figures against current vacancies and specialist recruitment advice before making decisions.

6. Use AI to organise your job search

Keeping track of multiple applications, interviews and follow-ups can quickly become a job in itself!

AI can help you create an application tracker, plan your job search activity, prepare questions for employers and draft professional follow-up emails.

It can also help you compare opportunities against your priorities, whether that's salary, location, career progression, technical development or company culture.

Just be mindful of what personal or confidential information you're sharing with AI platforms.

A final word: don't lose the human touch!
