Summer Recruitment
With the summer holidays now in full swing, we asked scientists:

The response was a resounding yes.
Whilst nobody wants to spend their holiday interviewing, most respondents said they'd make an exception for the right opportunity (assuming it’s logistically possible!) One commenter even urged employers: "Do not stop recruiting!!!"
It's a useful reminder that whilst annual leave can make scheduling more challenging, recruitment doesn't stop over the summer, and neither do candidates.
Keeping momentum
Everyone deserves a proper break, but annual leave doesn't have to mean recruitment goes on hold.
Summer hiring can feel more challenging due to:
- Hiring team absences
- Increased workloads whilst colleagues cover each other's holidays
- Delayed decisions
- Candidates losing interest, leaving you back at square one
It's understandable to hit pause, but a little planning before people head off can make all the difference. For example:
- Schedule interviews or feedback before key decision-makers go away, even if it means flexing your usual interview process.
- Agree who will deputise and keep recruitment moving while colleagues are away.
- Keep candidates informed if decisions are likely to take a little longer.
That final point is arguably the simplest, and the most important. Candidates aren't expecting miracles in August; they just appreciate knowing what's happening. A quick update can make the difference between maintaining engagement and having to restart the search when everyone returns.
Summer opportunity
Whilst some organisations slow their hiring activity over the summer, others use it as an opportunity to get ahead.
With fewer businesses actively recruiting, there can be less competition for the strongest candidates. The key isn't rushing decisions; it's maintaining enough momentum to keep great people engaged until you're ready to move.
Wishing you a relaxing summer 🏝️
Whether you're taking time off over the school holidays or enjoying a quieter period in the lab or office, we hope you get the chance for a well-earned break.
We'll be here throughout the summer to keep recruitment moving while you recharge.
VRS News!
July has been another fun-packed month!
Simon had a fantastic time attending and presenting at the BSPR Careers Workshop, sharing career advice alongside some brilliant speakers from across the scientific community.
Closer to home, we swapped the office for a canal boat, holding our morning team meeting on board before enjoying an afternoon on the water together.
The biggest celebrations, however, belonged to Peter and VRS alumnus Ross, who both got married this month. We were honoured to celebrate with them and wish them and their wonderful brides every happiness for the future. 🥂
And finally, on 1st August, VRS officially celebrates 25 years in business! We'd planned to make a bigger fuss of it, but between conferences, canal boats and weddings, we've been a little busy celebrating other milestones first. We'll be raising a glass (or two) and looking back on 25 years of scientists recruiting scientists over the coming months.
